Do you sometimes fall in that stage in life where it feels like you can’t feel God’s presence anymore? You’re in a battle you just can’t seem to win? You’re crying out to God…just to receive what seems like silence…to be left alone to figure things out? You just had that fulfilling relationship with God a bit ago; you loved reading the bible, praying exceedingly, listening to worship music. And now you slowly drifted away doing your regular daily activities. What happened? “Can God hear me? Did he leave? I don’t feel his presence anymore”.
This is your life as a Christian. We tend to forget that Jesus himself suffered as well, what makes us think we will not go along trials as well? Following Jesus does not mean we will no longer have trails, we will no longer feel the pain of this world nor will we walk a sinless path. It means He is with us through the trials, we have hope at the end of the tunnel and we aren’t suffering in the present just to suffer in the eternal, we will have peace with the Father in the end. Our lives are called to resemble Christ…remember he was tortured to die for our sins, we will not walk this road untouched but we are protected. God warns us that following Christ will be hard, facing affliction, rejection and turmoil, this is a choice to follow Him or not. Jesus does not say following Him will be a breeze, yet he promises eternal blessing.
We also need to ask ourselves: Do we choose our emotions over the Word or the Word over our emotions? No matter how we are feeling in the moment, God’s word remains true and unwavering. For example, if you feel like God has left you alone to figure things out by yourself, Satan will plant those seeds of doubt in your head about the Father. Now you have a choice, continue spiraling downhill with the lies fed to you…or seek the truth and build your firm foundation again. It is ok to start over when falling behind and it is NEVER too late. God’s word says to trust in the Lord with all your heart and lean not on your own understanding. So of course he does not want you to do it all alone, (Prov 3:5–6) he specifically says not too! God gives us promises and he never leaves us in the dark alone regardless of how we are feeling in the moment.
How to fight a spiritual warfare battle
You fight spiritual warfare with prayer.
The bible tells us to be watchful and to guard our hearts against the iniquity of sin.
- Recognize it exists and genuinely examine your hearts. (Romans 1:17)
- Realize that the devil exists. He is lurking, preying and ready to have our minds at our weakest times. In Hosea 4:6, it states, “My people are destroyed from lack of knowledge.” Know who Satan is…your true enemy.
- Understand that there is a war going on and we are right in the middle. Be active not passive. When wars go on in the world, even though some are not in the military and going off to fight we are still affected by it; the same with our spiritual life. There is a spiritual war going on between good and evil. Have confidence in God’s power and stand firm in His word. Listen to the Holy Spirit for guidance and when you pray, don’t forget to listen just as much as speaking.
- Know Jesus: The Holy Spirit lives in all who believe in and follow Jesus Christ . The power He gives us is more powerful than the evil that’s on the earth, even when it doesn’t feel like it. By studying Jesus’ life on Earth, we learn how to serve God without fear.
- Know your authority in your prayer time. Have confidence in your prayer time, that His Word is true, that prayer is powerful in any situation and that He truly hears you. Jesus has given us authority to pray in His name!
Scriptures to pray when under a spiritual attack
- 1 John 4:4
- 2 Corinthians 10:4–5
- Psalm 60:4–5
- Ephesians 6:13
When you hear peoples testimonies you have a few who are blessed to have been raised in a household of a Christ following family and they have been saved. Yet a majority of people have found Christ in the midst of darkness; even the worst times of their lives. In the times where some scream, ‘Why me!!’ Questioning God because of the trials you’re going through as if you ‘deserve everything good’ is extremely deceitful, selfish and full of hypocrisy (I am a Christian, why would this happen to me!?) Have you ever wondered why people find the glory of God in the worst times in their lives? Why do non Christians suddenly pray when there’s nothing else to do in their hardships? Why do we yell for help in an empty room when no one physically can hear? When all else fails what is usually our last option? An intervention of spiritual guidance. As humans, God made us to cling onto something in life, some may call it an idol, some may call it a religion, some may call it the universe, yet it all points to one being. God. Before becoming Christian, finding God in the good times could’ve been hard and p[possibly non existent because we naturally expect the best things to happen to us, disregarding that God had anything to do with the good in our lives. Why seek a God if we never had to? Would you go to a hospital for a cure if you were aware that you weren’t sick and perfectly healthy? That doesn’t make sense right? Well the same goes for our spiritual lives. We sometimes have to go seeking help when we really need it and have no other options. Psalm 50:15 says ‘call upon me on the day of trouble; I will deliver you and you will honor me.’ Yet this is the beauty of God, he truly wants us to seek Him! We have free will to do what we choose, yet he is open ready for you to come to Him.
Going through a spiritual warfare doesn’t always mean we have done something wrong to deserve our situation. Although wrongdoing has its own consequences, seasons of difficulty are not always the result. Its possible to be on a great path with Jesus and still go through hard times through no fault of our own but due to the nature of life itself. We are so quick to ask ‘why me?’ or ‘what did I do to deserve this?’
Remember Jesus’ own disciples, the closest to Jesus there was! He sent them by boat across the enormous sea and they came face to face with a storm. They had a strong relationship with God yet still faced this challenge. Yet made it through. (Isiah 50:10)
What we need to do in these times is trust in Jesus and rely on Him like never before.
We confidently get on a plane without knowing the pilot, trusting we will get to our destination; when we drive, we drive subconsciously having faith in others around you that you won’t get in a wreck; we fall asleep trusting we will wake up in the morning; even if you have a bit of fear in these situations we do it anyways. We all have faith even without knowing, we just have to put more faith in our creator.
Let us not forget that our journey with Christ is not about us. We get so caught up in what God is doing for us but what do we do for the Lord? Not as if we have to work for salvation, but if we love and honor something (in this case God) we do what we can to be pleasing! In giving back, tithing, being healthy, we give back to our creator!
The full armor of God:
- The helmet of Salvation- protects your mind (The enemy wants us to doubt God, Jesus and our salvation.)
- Breastplate of Righteousness- The righteousness of God protects your heart. (Satan attacks our hearts, emotions, self worth and trust. He accuses us of being guilty and unworthy.)
- Sword of the Spirit- Protects us from lies
- Shield of Faith- Protects us from fiery arrows. Cling to hope in Christ. Refuse to believe the lies. (The enemy attacks with insults, setbacks and temptations)
- Belt of Honor- Protects Will. (Satan fights with lies. Only believers have God’s truth.
- The Bible- When tempted trust in the TRUTH of God’s word.
- Feet of peace: Spread The Good News — Be available and ready. The enemy wants us to think that telling others about the good news is worthless and hopeless talk.
2 Cor 10:4–5: The weapons we fight with are not weapons of the world. On the contrary, they have divine power to demolish strongholds. We demolish arguments and every pretension that sets itself up against the knowledge of God, and we take captive every thought to make it obedient to Christ.
