How to Retain & Comprehend Scripture…Based on Your own personal Learning Technique

Everyone learns, retains and comprehends differently. So here are some types on how to retain what you read in the bible and memorize scripture based on your own god given skills! I will explain what each learning technique is and then give you ways to apply that to your scripture readings!

1. Visual-(Spatial)

Visual learners prefer to see things drawn out or in graphs to understand concepts. If you like to doodle, draw, or create mind maps, it’s likely that you’re a visual learner. Visual learners use images and symbols to connect concepts and be able to see relationships between ideas.

  • color code your scripture! Use a bible coloring code so you can understand specifics about what you’re studying.
  • write the verse on sticky notes or in the notes on your phone
  • Journal about the scripture
  • Draw a picture of what the verse explains
  • place it in places (mirrors, car, refrigerator, etc.) so you can see it and remember it throughout the day.

2. Auditory-Aural (also musical)

This style is also known as aural or auditory-musical. Such learners like to listen and hear information in order to process it optimally. Those who lean towards aural learning are able to notice the nuances between pitch and tone.

  • Listen to the audio version of the verse or record yourself saying the verse — Hearing it being spoken to you helps you gain more of the context behind the verse
  • Make it into a tune – Make a bet out of the verse so you can hear it in a beat and it sticks in your head. Whether its a rap, a song, a beat, with a musical instrument, etc.
  • Read it out loud
  • Play music in the background

3. Verbal

If you love words and writing, you’re likely a verbal learner. Linguistic learners enjoy reading and writing and enjoy word play. Some techniques that verbal learners employ to soak up information could include role playing.

  • read the scripture out loud to yourself or to someone else
  • write it out in a notebook, journal, your phone, sticky notes.
  • Read the verse to someone and it explain what you gained from it to them
  • Study the words and even the Hebrew or Greek meaning behind them really in depth.
  • Have a certain number of times you say it out loud.

4. Physical-(Kinesthetic)

Kinesthetic or physical learners are hands-on. Rather than watching a demo or listening to directions, physical learners like to perform the task.

  • Walking and memorizing — Repeat the verse as you take a walk. Or read it at the same time as you go on a walk
  • Figure out how this scripture applies to your life and actively act it out throughout the day
  • As you work out, sometimes instead of music, meditate on the scripture. Understand its context and listen to the audible version. Think about this verse

5. Logical-(Mathematical)

Logical learners have a mathematical brain. They can recognize patterns easily and connect concepts. To understand ideas, they prefer to group them into categories.

  • Ask yourself logical questions about the verse or look up any questions that could be related so it can stick in your head.
  • Learn about the background of the verse not just the verse itself
  • Ask those logical questions and dig for those answers. “How is this true? How does this apply to me” who is writing this? Why is this important”
  • Make it fun with a math equation! 1 father, 1 son, one spirit = 3 in 1 (all for 1 (me))

6. Social

Social learners are known as interpersonal learners. They can communicate well both verbally and non-verbally. Social learners have a distinctive sensitivity and an empathetic nature. This is why they often work in social fields that help others, like counseling, coaching, or teaching.

  • Post it everywhere!
  • Write about it on social media, make posts about what you have learned. Instagram is the best! But there is also Facebook, twitter, etc.
  • Make a Pinterest board
  • Blog about your scripture reading journey
  • Have a group study with friends to talk about the scripture
  • Find someone online to be a scripture studying friend here

7. Solitary- (Intrapersonal)

Intrapersonal learners like their solitude. When you think of this type of learner, you can imagine an author or researcher who spends a lot of time with their own thoughts and works best with the least distractions.

  • Go away to a quiet place with a nice hot cup of coffee or tea and study it quietly. Music or no music (if music, no words just instrumentals)
  • Make a prayer room, it could be a close t or a section of your house. Pure quiet, where you can post sticky notes on a wall, get your thoughts out whether verbally or in a journal. Just spend your time with God
  • Spend time in nature as you learn about this verse
  • In your own space talk to God in a private place about your verse of choice.

My tips for your journey in reading scripture!

  • Meditate on the scripture
  • Study this verse. Look it up and gain other points of views, you want to get the bet out of it that you can. Really think about what god is saying or telling you in this verse and why. Why is it important ? What’s the background on?
  • Pray over the scripture and for yourself to memorize it
  • Truly pray over this verse. On how to apply it to your life, ask yourself questions as you try to understand this verse. Pray to gain full understanding, knowledge and wisdom out of this verse.
  • Tell a friend
  • Post it on social media, don’t be stingy with what you’ve learned! Call or text a friend or family member to tell them about it. TELL THE WHOLE WORLD
  • Revisit the verse daily for a week
  • You always want to recap what you have read and learned so that you don’t just forget about it. Fill your brain with this verse so that it stays with you and it’ll become just kind of automatic. The more you reread it and say it and think it, the more it’ll get stuck in your head. I’m sure you all still know the national anthem and its not by choice, this is roof it works!
  • Figure out how to spread it
